Why Odoo 19, now that Odoo 20 is out
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026, and it brings real improvements. Like every new major version, it will take a few months of maintenance releases before it is ready for day-to-day business, and the OCA module repositories that many Community systems rely on opened their 20.0 branches only on September 28, 2026, with no modules in them yet. As of September 30, 2026, Odoo's own upgrade service does not yet offer 20.0 as a target (upgrade.odoo.com lists 19.0, 18.0 and 17.0), and Odoo's September 2026 announcement to its customers expects it by the end of November 2026. So for production we recommend Odoo 19 today.
From 19, moving to 20 later is one version step, not the three or four you may be facing now.
Support dates, from Odoo's table
Standard support lasts three years per major version. Odoo's standard support for 17.0 ended in September 2026; it lists 18.0 until September 2027 and 19.0 until September 2028 (planned). Databases older than the covered versions pay an extra fee on Enterprise.
Two jobs in every upgrade
Migrating the data
For Enterprise, Odoo's upgrade service migrates the standard modules. For Community, the OCA's OpenUpgrade project provides the migration scripts, one major version at a time; our article on upgrading Odoo Community from 18 to 19 shows where its 19.0 coverage stands. Either way, the result is rehearsed on a copy of your database, never first on production.
Porting your code
Odoo's upgrade documentation is plain about this part: "If a change introduced by a new version breaks a customization, it is the responsibility of the maintainer of your custom module to make it compatible with the new version of Odoo." That is the work we price.
Between 16 and 19, the changes that break real modules include the removal of attrs and states from views, list views renamed from tree to list, a reorganized groups model in 19, the legacy JavaScript client, and _sql_constraints, which 19 no longer creates. Our article on upgrading custom modules from 16 to 19 lists them with sources.
How the upgrade runs
-
Inventory and plan one to two weeks
Every installed module sorted three ways: standard Odoo, OCA modules with a 19.0 release, and custom code to port. Dead modules are flagged, because every module removed first is one less to port.
-
Port and rehearse two to eight weeks, by module count
AI agents do the mechanical parts of the port module by module, and a person reviews every diff before it reaches the staging server. The upgrade runs on neutralized copies of your database until it is clean end to end.
-
Your team tests one to two weeks
Figures that must not change, such as the trial balance, open receivables and stock value, are compared before and after. Each department runs its weekly routine on the copy.
-
Production one scheduled night
The same script that passed the rehearsals, with a rollback point and a written go/no-go check.
Four to twelve weeks in all, depending on how many custom modules there are to port.
What it costs
The price comes from three counts. The free scan makes them from your database, and the project fees in its quote are binding for what the scan counts. The scan reads Odoo 14 and later; for Odoo 8 to 13, we prepare the quote by hand from a backup of your database, and the upgrade is offered all the same.
Custom modules to port
- None: $0
- 1 to 5: $750
- 6 to 15: $2,000
- 16 to 40: $4,500
- Over 40: $4,500 plus $100 per module over 40
Plus
- $500 per major version jumped (16 to 19 is three)
- $250 per Enterprise app replaced, if you are also leaving Enterprise
Example
- Odoo 16 Community with 8 custom modules: $2,000 + $1,500 = $3,500
- Billed 30% at start, 40% at staging sign-off and 30% at completion

Use us for the upgrade, then be gone
Want to get to Odoo 19, or to Odoo 19 Community with no Enterprise license, and then run it yourselves? It is a one-off project and does not need a Managed Odoo subscription, before or after. The price is fixed from the published tables, by custom modules to port, none: $0, 1 to 5: $750, 6 to 15: $2,000, 16 to 40: $4,500, over 40: $4,500 plus $100 per module over 40; plus $500 per major version jumped and $250 per Enterprise app replaced, billed 30% at start, 40% at staging sign-off and 30% at completion.
What you walk away with: the upgraded Odoo on your server (when we set it up on your company's Hetzner account, with backups in your own Backblaze bucket and the backup job still running); every ported module in your repository with full source, licensed to you under LGPL-3; and the handover package (the credentials we created, a backup test report, the runbook, the integrations sheet and who has access to what). Defects you report within 14 days of acceptance are fixed at no charge, and then we remove our access and confirm it in writing, unless you ask us to keep it. How an upgrade-only project ends.
Questions people ask
Can we go straight from Odoo 16 to 19?
Yes. Odoo's upgrade service takes the data from 16 to 19 in one request; with the OCA's OpenUpgrade scripts it passes through 17 and 18 in turn. Your custom modules are ported straight to 19. On the price list, 16 to 19 counts as three versions.
Why not upgrade to Odoo 20 now?
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. New major versions get a stream of fixes in their first months, and the main OCA module repositories opened their 20.0 branches only on September 28, 2026, with no modules in them yet. As of September 30, 2026, Odoo's own upgrade service does not yet offer 20.0 as a target (upgrade.odoo.com lists 19.0, 18.0 and 17.0), and Odoo's September 2026 announcement to its customers expects it by the end of November 2026. Landing on 19 now and taking the single step to 20 once it has settled is the calmer path. If you need 20 sooner, we rehearse it on a copy of your data and tell you plainly what we find.
How long is Odoo 19 supported?
Odoo's support table lists standard support for 19.0 until September 2028 (planned), for 18.0 until September 2027 and for 17.0 until September 2026.
Our database is on Odoo Online. Can you upgrade it?
On Online, upgrades are included and mandatory on Odoo's schedule; if you do not start one before the due date, Odoo upgrades the database automatically. If you want to leave Online, the database has to be on a major version first; our article on the intermediate-version trap explains why.
What if a module cannot be ported?
The inventory flags it before you are quoted, with the options: port it, replace it with a standard or OCA module, or drop it. Nothing is decided without you.
What happens after go-live?
Two weeks of post-upgrade fixes are included. After that, Managed Odoo covers day-to-day fixes if you want it.
Can Odoo Community be upgraded to 19 without Enterprise?
Yes, with the OCA's OpenUpgrade scripts. Its 19.0 branch covers the main apps, such as accounting, sales, purchase, inventory and manufacturing, while other modules, including the US localization, were not covered yet on September 28, 2026. We check your module list against it and rehearse on a copy.

Find out what your upgrade would cost
The module list quote reads your installed modules in your browser and prices the upgrade from the published tables. Send it to us from the same page, or start the free scan today.
- Plans, add-ons and hourly rates are published; larger projects are quoted up front, and the project fees in the free scan's quote are binding for what the scan counts.
- An upgrade needs no subscription: at acceptance you get the handover, defects you report within 14 days are fixed at no charge, and then we remove our access (how it ends).
- Managed Odoo is month to month: thirty days' notice, no minimum term.
- Your server, code, backups and credentials are in your company's name.
